![]() ![]() This concert from 8 July 1991 was the last of Miles Davis’ many appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival and took place only a few months before his death. Miles Davis with Quincy Jones & the Gil Evans Orchestra Live at Montreux Blu-ray offers solid video and great audio in this excellent Blu-ray release Miles Davis with Quincy Jones & the Gil Evans Orchestra Live at Montreux (1991) It only confirmed to me that this was not a concert BD in the truest sense, but rather a live show reminiscent of the old-time variety-show spectacles (albeit on a larger stage).Īll in all.I enjoyed the disc immensely despite my reservations as outlined above, and I have no reservations at all about recommending this Blu-ray concert disc.Miles Davis with Quincy Jones & the Gil Evans Orchestra Live at Montreux Blu-ray I also did not like the interspersion of the video clips. As such, it tended to be somewhat corny and cheesy. The commentary by David and Friends was certainly scripted, which took away any feeling of spontaneity I look for in a live event. My biggest reservation about this disc was that it was a staged event. I can't comment too much on the video as I only have a 720p/1080i Panny Plasma and noticed some shots (mainly of the audience) that I felt were soft and kinda a la the David Gilmour disc in some sequances. I'm not a Michael Buble' fan at all (I find him a bit arrogant in his on-stage presence), but Feeling Good was an absolutely outstanding number. It's just that these captured my attention. That's not to say the other tracks weren't interesting or less worthy. Track 26: Charice - I Have Nothing/I Will Always Love You Track 18: Andrea Bocelli & Katherine McPhee - The Prayer Track 5: Brian McKnight - Mornin'/After The Love Has Gone Some of the outstanding performances for me were: I think the artists really tried to put their best foot forward in making this a celebration of David Foster's immeasurable talent. Having said that, the performances are all oustanding. It certainly has it's moments of grandeur and pace, but all in all it's a disc that just doesn't make you jump up and dance. This is a very relaxing kind of concert and something you'd want to watch when in the mood for just chilling out. Most impressive was how the big band was mixed, it really brought a realism to the presentation.Īlthough the reviews were good on it, I was still somewhat hesitant despite my familiarity with a lot of the artists. Vocals were fine and the soundtrack was very dynamic. I was especially pleased that I could make out details such as drum cymbals (which aren't always easy to discern) along with the backing vocals, drums and keyboards. It's a near-field mix which means you could hear specific instruments in the front and the rear, which I prefer as oppose to leaving the rear channels for ambience. Now I believe it's a 1080i transfer, but it's alright with me.Īudio is the highlight. Images were sharp and the presentation exhibited no video noise. It was lit excellently, no dark areas or any low light level noise that I noticed. I can't think of one thing to complain about the video. ![]() My particular favorites: Let the good times roll w/ Rahsaan Patterson, If I ever lose this heaven with Ledisi, Walking in Space. While I won't say the performances were the best i've seen, it does give you an idea the breadth of the artists Q's worked with over the years. Watched it tonight and I give it Reference for both audio/video. ![]()
